Alex Day

Originally a bartender in Death & Co’s early days, Alex has since co-formed various businesses in partnership with David Kaplan and Devon Tarby. As Chief Operating Officer at Gin & Luck, Death & Co’s parent company, Alex leads all company departments, from daily operations to new venture planning. Passionate about education and writing, Alex is a regular speaker at industry conferences, has been a contributor to various publications co-authored three books, and is an active participant in the leadership groups of the Tales of the Cocktail Education Committee and the Independent Restaurant Coalition. Along with Death & Co: Welcome Home, he is the co-author of Death & Co: Modern Classic Cocktails, as well as the James Beard Book of the Year and Spirited Award-winning book, Cocktail Codex: Origins, Fundamentals, Formulas. Alex lives in Portland, Maine, with his husband, Andrew.

 
 

David Kaplan

David has worked in the hospitality business since the age of 13. In the summer of 2006, at the age of 24, he designed and opened Death & Company in the East Village of Manhattan, and shortly after formed the hospitality consulting and management company Proprietors LLC with Alex Day and Devon Tarby. Over the years, David has become an invaluable industry resource, participating in numerous business and hospitality conferences and panels, has judged cocktail competitions, and led dozens of panel discussions at the annual Tales of the Cocktail convention. Along with Death & Co: Welcome Home, he is the co-author of Death & Co: Modern Classic Cocktails, as well as the James Beard Book of the Year and Spirited Award-winning book, Cocktail Codex: Origins, Fundamentals, Formulas. As the Founder of Death & Co and CEO of parent company, Gin & Luck, David drives company growth and culture, and directly manages the marketing and retail divisions. When not on the road, he lives in Seattle with his wife Jenna, their daughter, Aria, and their dogs, Stella and Doug.

Nick Fauchald

Nick Fauchald is a Minneapolis-based author. He has written several award-winning books about cooking and cocktails, including the best-selling Death & Co and Cocktail Codex, which won the James Beard Award for “book of the year.” He is also the publisher of Short Stack Editions, a series of small-format, single-subject cookbooks. 

 

Devon Tarby

Devon Tarby began her career as a bartender at world-renowned cocktail bar The Varnish, located in Downtown Los Angeles. Today, she is the VP of Food & Beverage for Gin & Luck and manages Proprietors LLC, a full-service hospitality firm that consults on and operates a myriad of F&B projects. Over the last 10 years, Devon has opened dozens of projects across the US and abroad ranging from Michelin starred restaurants, award winning cocktail bars, movie theaters, hotels, to rooftop lounges. In addition to leading all aspects of consulting work for the company, Devon also directs training, education and beverage development for clients. She is a co-author on the James Beard Book of the Year, Cocktail Codex, along with the group’s latest book, Death & Co: Welcome Home. Devon lives in Los Angeles, CA with her fiancé, Alejandro.

 

Tyson Buhler

After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Academy with a degree in Hospitality and Restaurant Management, Tyson Buhler worked in a number of Arizona’s top bar programs before moving to New York in 2012 to bartend at world-renowned cocktail bar, Death & Company. In 2015, Buhler took home the honor of US Bartender of the Year in Diageo’s World Class cocktail competition. After two years as Head Bartender, Tyson took over as Beverage Director for Gin & Luck with a focus on beverage development and training, overseeing properties such as Death & Company NYC, Death & Company Denver and Death & Company Los Angeles, and The Danforth as well as various consulting and management projects. Tyson currently lives with his fiancé Shel Bourbon and puppy Ferris in Lawrence, KS.
